What is sphagnum moss?
Sphagnum is a wetland moss. Dried, it is used as a growing medium because it holds water and lets air through.
Why it holds so much water
Its leaves have dead, hollow cells that fill with water. Dried moss absorbs many times its own weight and releases it slowly, without compacting.
What it is used for
- A growing medium for orchids and other plants that grow on trees.
- Seedlings, cuttings and plants that need even moisture.
- Lining hanging baskets and planters.
- Terrariums and pot top-dressing, so the soil dries out more slowly.
